Ken Larson | Co-founder
With more than 47 years and 8000 hours of flying experience, Ken Larson is an ATP, CFI, CFII, AGI and Gold Seal Instructor Rated pilot. He also holds a law degree, flew in the U.S. Air Force as a jet aircraft instructor and for 10 years flew business jets commercially with NetJets, a Berkshire Hathaway Company. In the fall of 2013, Ken started the student aerospace program in Sandpoint at Forrest Bird Charter School; since then, the program has transitioned to its present location at Sandpoint High School. Ken volunteers his time as NIHSAP’s lead aviation instructor. He is an active flight instructor based at the Sandpoint Airport. Ken serves as NIHSAP’s President.
Barney and Carol Ballard, Co-Founders
Barney and Carol Ballard are aviation enthusiasts with a passion for providing young people with opportunities that enhance their ability to lead productive and satisfying lives. Before starting his business career, Barney served in the U.S. Air Force where he piloted F-100s and served as a FAC in Vietnam during the Siege of An Loc in 1972.
Following military service and the launch of several successful restaurant ventures in Colorado, Barney and his partner Carol moved to Sandpoint in 1984 to raise their family and open the first of numerous area restaurants they owned and operated over the span of nearly three decades. The Ballard’s have played an active role in local education-related, business and civic issues that impact the greater Sandpoint community. They are committed to building healthy communities through personal engagement, and recognize that providing education and job opportunities for students is essential to the area’s future stability and vibrancy. Barney serves as NIHSAP’s Treasurer.
